The Amish elders were waiting for them downstairs after Colin and Sam settled Anne into the bedroom the Millers had prepared. Jacob’s daughter-in-law sat with the vampire and had promised to call for them if she awoke. Brave girl. Colin prayed the IVs of blood Sam had been pouring into Anne’s ravaged body would stem her hunger when she regained consciousness. The Amish penchant for forgiveness may not extend to one of their people being eaten.

He examined the faces of the crowd. Not just the elders of their sect. All the adults of the Miller and Levy clans stood behind the seated gentlemen, except for Jacob’s wife Deborah who perched in a chair next to her husband. Odd, since women didn’t have much leadership standing in their order, but the lady had more fire in her than women half of her eighty years.

Jacob waved toward the two straightback chairs by the cold fireplace. “We would have our answers now, please.”

Colin sucked in a deep breath. The tableau resembled a trial far too much for his comfort. He glanced at Sam.

She smiled and winked. If you need to talk to me privately, just think it very hard. I’ll hear you.

For once, her telepathic abilities were comforting. Releasing the air he held, he eased into the chair and leaned elbows on his knees. “Where would you like to start?”

“The murders. Do you know who is responsible?” Adam Lapp said. A measured, thoughtful man, he was noted even among the Amish community for his few words and circumspectness.

After another glance at Sam, Colin jumped into the mess. His clients deserved the truth, no matter how crazy it sounded. “We believe a wanagamesak, a Native American guardian spirit, is doing the actual killing, but it may be controlled by someone. We’re not sure who that might be.”

“Why would anyone want the Yoders or Thomas Levy dead?”

“Again, we’re not sure. This thing’s also killed Dick Evans and attacked Mike Warner, two English. We’ve been trying to figure out the connection between the five men.”

Grief ravaging his face, William Yoder, Simon’s middle son, jumped into the questioning. “Does it have anything to do with the Birkenwald Group’s offer to buy our properties or the state trying to force us off our lands? Could Evans have been assisting them?”

Colin shrugged. “Maybe Birkenwald’s involved, but the start of the attacks may be coincidental as well.” The dark looks of the farmers agreed with his own assessment of the likelihood of such a coincidence. “All I can tell you is Dick had been working with the sheriff in their investigation to find the killer.”

William’s eyes narrowed. “Can tell us or will tell us?”

Colin raked a hand through his hair. Damn, that had not come out right. “It’s all I know. The sheriff and Dick even questioned me since they thought it was a little too coincidental Anne and I were the ones who found the only survivor from the attacks two nights ago.”

“Matt Jessup also survived.” William’s tone carried a ton of accusation.
